Being Light in the Dark Place!!!

“So after I have completed this task and have made sure that they have received this contribution, I will go to Spain …” Romans 15:28

For the Last 6 months God has had me in a very interesting place. Right now I am Home Stateside in San Diego California. A few Major things have happened while I have been Home. I am working with the Pastoral Support Team at my Church,Serving in our young adult ministry (1825) I have a job as a Promotions Coordinator, and I am DJing consistently every weekend. God has used these things to create a catalyst for some Huge Ministry in my own home town.

At the Beginning of this year I was left with a choice. My Choices where prepare and try to raise support to go back to Spain this summer for a missions trip or stay Home and join the PST team at the Rock Church. After much prayer and waiting on the Lord I Chose to stay home, get equipped and reach out to my Home town. Because I chose to take this opportunity it has created a great movement in my heart. After Joining this group I was given the opportunity to go to Catalyst West. A Huge Conference held in the United States for Pastors and Young leaders. The Theme of this conference was “Courage”. The Biggest Point I took away from this Conference was “Take Courage: Have the courage to stay when it is easier to Leave.” Because of this I have been able to stay Home and love on my community better. God is opening my eyes to many things that are happening at home and even in my own church where we need to address Love better.

This has also led to me being able to get deeper involved with the young adult ministry at my church. Because of this Have been enable to really hang out and pour into the people in my community. God is opening doors to raise up new leaders. Recently God has been revealing the fruit of our ministry and I am seeing people from the last five years falling more in love with Him and really walking out their faith.

So out of all this one of my biggest prayers was that if I am Going to stay home God will have to provide me a job where I can Budget and pay off my debt and be able to have a sustainable income. And God has given me this. Right now I am DJing consistently at least twice a week or more and I am working with a local ultra lounge as their promotions coordinator. God has Given me vision to pay off my debt and save up for another trip Spain. This has been great because I get to serve in my community. This has also open up opportunities to contribute the Love of God through my talents at the local “Pride”(Gay pride) festival as well as many clubs and Bars around town. Being able to be out and about and Love on people well has been amazing. God is so Unique and works outside the box.

Mark 2:16-17: “When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Its so crazy when you read the gospels, how Jesus is always going to the sinners, the broken people, and just hanging out with them. Jesus, the Messiah, the example, is the first one to go and be among the “sinners”. He Brings Light to the Dark Places. All He has to do is be in the midst of all the Darkness and the fact that he is Light attracts.

I heard a quote: “we should not blame the darkness for being dark, but we should blame the light for not doing its Job”.

Also when we look at the story of Jesus, he wasn’t the guy who was always throwing scripture after scripture in every situation, but he was the man who was looking out for the needs of his disciples and the people who were around him. Even as a great teacher, and always giving great wisdom Jesus knew when people were hungry. Unlike many “Christians” today Jesus wouldn’t keep blabbering on if this is right or wrong he would see the need and said you know what I see you’re hungry let’s go eat and then we can talk.

Jesus is the guy who always shows up. I mean His First miracle was turning water into wine at a wedding party. Now back in Jesus day a Jewish wedding would last 7 days and it was the family’s responsibility make sure there was enough wine for the event all the way until the end. I think sometimes this part of the story can be missed very quickly… On the third day (John 2:1-11) we see that what was supposed to 7 days worth of wine for a more than like Huge wedding was already gone before the week was Half way over. These people were definitely having a heck of a party and getting very drunk. Jesus doesn’t Condemn the people for over drinking, or for under planning, but rather Jesus sees the need and provides a miracle for the need.

Mathew 22:36-40
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

The Heart of the Gospel is Love!!! Jesus is this shining example. One of the biggest ways we can share the gospel is by loving our neighbor. Merriam-Webster defines neighbor as: “one living or located near another.” This word is very broad, but makes a very huge point. When a person accepts the Gospel it is not just a defining point in their life, but this “Gospel” is actually an active part of ones life. It is because of the reconciling back to God through the gospel that we are able to love others. In Fact, when the gospel is truly in your life it will cause one to do good works… it is not that Good works are done to attain Gods favor, but the opposite. Because we are “Hidden in Christ” (Colossians 3:3), God doesn’t see us and our brokenness and failures, but he see the perfection of his son and we are seen as righteous.

SO crazy how God is moving in San Diego. 1825, YOU GUYS ALL ROCK!!!

God Blows my mind every time I see this community and the way they live life for Jesus and worship him!!! ART OF WAR was crazy!!! Doing live art and music in the center of our community with the soul purpose of being the door mat of the church and welcoming people. Being a group of individuals were you say its OK you can wipe off your dirty feet here. Jesus is waiting for you to come in. We have been waiting for you to arrive!!!!

Whenever any of you are feeling tired or your heart is just feeling out of it, Remember HE is with us and he is greater then our circumstances!!!!

When i was in Spain this summer i was with about 15 people for 6 weeks. These 15 people were the only people i knew in my heart of hearts were truly Christians walking in a relationship with Christ!!! They were young and Vibrant individuals!!! In Spain many people our age have left “religion” but are looking for something spiritual. They are willing to talk about Jesus, but going to Church is a whole other story.

A brief History of the Church in Spain:
“The advent of the Franco regime saw the restoration of the church’s rights. During the Franco years, Roman Catholicism was the only religion to have legal status”[1]. The leading of Francisco Franco occurred after the the Spanish Civil War in 17 July 1936 – 1 April 1939. In this time Spain went from a “Nationalist State”[2] to becoming a Autocratic State Run by Francisco Franco, known as “Francoist Spain”[3].
Then in 1979 Spain went back to a monarchy but with more of a “Democratic”[4] Government. When this happened, “It took the new 1978 Spanish Constitution to confirm the right of Spaniards to religious freedom and to begin the process of disestablishing Catholicism as the state religion”[1]. Thus Causing a very religious country to leave a lot of its roots from the early 1900s and before and move into a more liberal mindset. Essentially the traditions of the church were forced on the people of Spain and this caused a bad taste to be left in their mouths. When the freedom came to Spain to practice religious freedom many have chosen not to practice any. Though very interested in Spirituality, when the word “Church/Iglesia” is mentioned it has culturally left peoples mouths to be dry and unwilling to find what they are looking for there. The fear of rules and regulations, being force to fit the standard and knowing that we can never reach the standard and fall short. Instead of church people want to have community and be Loved.

Many People especially the young adult communities are looking for just this. Community and Love. We as a generation run to many places: Art shows, Concerts, Raves, Lounges, Discotecas, Bars, Restaurants, movies, and so many more. Where do you run to? Is that niche of people a true Community filled with Love?

Even in the presence of 10 people from 1825 and I am Blown away by the power of God moving in the place!!! Over the past few weeks i have been going to a group that meets that is all the leaders of our young adult ministry “1825″. This room was filled with at least 100 people 75 of which i know are official leaders and are truly walking with Jesus. The others are either friends of these people or are looking for a place to just find God. In Spain, the young adult community will usually not attend something like church or a gathering consistently unless it has in general 100 people or more attending on a regular basis. When this happens then people will usually show up because the community is there. Spain is all about relationship and is very community centered. If we were able to pour out into the young adult communities in Spain the same way we do here in San Diego with Forward thinking events like “Art of War” and many cafe nights in just hanging out and have pure spiritual conversations in a loving community, then i believe that a Revival of the young adult communities will happen and people will truly turn their hearts top Christ, not because the government says to but because of the wonderful things he has done and the love and community if provides for us as a people!!!!

I see God already moving in Altea, Spain. Altea is a small City on the mediterranean sea between Valencia and Alicante. This is where a missions group called “Edge Project” happens. “Edge Project [is] A Summer Adventure living abroad in Spain. Building global respect for God, culture, community, & artistic expressions of faith. Our journeys are shared in community with faith conversations. It is an open space for informal exchanges of ideas, biblical perspective of the arts, international missions, and cultural views of life according to the Holy Scriptures. Everyday is a practical, real life adventure with the mission to touch others in Love.” This trip truly changed my perspective!!!

It is because i am blessed with this 1825 community that I can say :

“But each day the Lord pours his unfailing love upon me,
and through each night I sing his songs,
praying to God who gives me life.”

Psalm 42:8

When I am in Church and I see the fruit of this ministry, Standing with arms lifted up worshiping God in multiple hundreds I am silenced and in awe of how amazing my God is!!! If other people around the world, that are in the dying churches, could see our young and vibrant community and connect with us personally, the hope that it brings encourages them to fight to the end!!! To know that the next generation of youth and young adults walk with our Lord is a Blessing beyond belief!!!

“21 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of[ your evil behavior. 22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— 23 if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant. Colossians 1:21-23

It is also what drives me to want to connect with other people: so that they can see the Lord in the way my community gets to and they can experience Jesus in a fresh and unique way!!!

If this is you, I would encourage you to Pray and Consider this short term missions trip and ask God to provide. I pray that you will be open to see just how blessed we are in our community and in the USA in General. When we think of Spain we don’t see a Physically poor or super struggling place from our earthly perspective. We see beautiful vibrant people that party all the time, Eating out, hanging out on the beach and watching Soccer and bullfights. Spain seems to look likes its doing well. They are flourishing with Community but lack in the knowledge and true love of Christ. But you can be the one who brings this to Spain and be part of the beginning of the revival. Go with an open Heart, Make disciples, even to the Ends of the earth. Experience the ends of the earth on the EDGE!!!!

Those he calls, he will prepare you and HE will Rock your world and change your life and heart. There is an emptiness that wants to get filled!!! A longing for real, pure, organic, raw and loving Community!!! I love all of you and Pray you get to experience God’s Love and Community in your lives!!!

My heart is to go back and pour out to Spain, but right now I know I am supposed to stay and flourish and be refreshed, while pouring out into my home family of 1825, the Rock Church and San Diego in general.

2011-New Beginnings!!!

Wow 2010 was an amazing year of accomplishment!!! I was able to hit every single Goal I set except for one!!! God is so good and faithful and able to empower us to finish well.

Things i accomplished in 2010:

-Finish my A.A. in Arts & Humanities at Palomar College
-This then Upgraded my Associates in Theology from Calvary Chapel Bible College to a Bachelors in Biblical Studies.
-I went to Spain for the first time in my life.
- I got to go to IBIZA for the first time.
– while there i got to live a dream and actually was given a chance to DJ at a workers dive Bar called VIVA. (This was totally God opening a door for me. I was only on the Island for 5 days. Most people who get to DJ are usually living on the island trying to work as DJs promoters and all that encompasses that part of the entertainment industry on the island)
– I also made a few new DJ friends from the UK (Leeds and Sheffield). Because of this i almost got a second gig at a place called vodka club which is bigger then a Dive bar but not quite a ginormous Discoteca!!! But I wasn’t able to play because i had to come back stateside. But to be asked to come back from some really cool people was an amazing feeling and i praise God for moving in the way he did!!!
-i also got to meet a team called 24-7 who are missionaries that bring people out to the island on short term trips to just serve and love on the kids and adults who are out there to party!!! It is so awesome to see people with the same heart as mine being a huge light in a place that can feel so dark that most Christians would just cast it off and say no way!!! But the people there are getting in the mud and connecting with people at their level and truly showing the Love of Christ!!!
-I experienced and learn what true community looks like and the potential we have to evangelize the lost if we just shut up and Loved on people well while being present in the community that God Has Called us to!!!!

“And He said to him, ” ‘YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’”This is the great and foremost commandment.”The second is like it, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ “On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”

After such an amazing year there is so much that is on my heart that can be wrapped up in this verse!!! God has shown me that No matter where we are in the world whether at home or out in a “foreign” land that the mission field is right in front of you. Our mission is to “Make Disciples”. The way this begins is through relationship. This is starting to become a life lesson for me for the past 4 years now. When a person is truly in love with the God with all of their Heart, all of their soul and all of their mind, there is truly nothing in this world that can stop them from doing the will of the one they Love!!! Along with this a person who is in this love with God naturally begins to be enabled to Love their neighbor as them self.

Recently my pastor, Miles McPherson, of the Rock Church in San Diego was talking about this very topic of how we can be a “Do Something” church. He said:

1. Count and assess your community’s need.
2. Walk to the locations of your community’s need.
3. Ask how you can help your community’s need.
4. Respond to your community’s need with love.
The Do Something Church – Part 1

When we love our Neighbor this is the beginning of evangelism, This is the Gospel of Jesus Christ put into action!!!

“It is remarkable that the only church history we have is the “Acts of the apostles”. The Holy Spirit has not preserved their sermons.They were very good ones, better then we shall ever preach, but still the Holy Spirit has only taken care of their “acts”. We have no books of the resolutions of the apostles; when we hold our church meetings we record our minutes and resolutions, but the Holy Spirit only puts down the “acts”. Our Act Should be such as to bear recording, for recorded they will be. We must live as under the more immediate eye of God, and as in the blaze of the great all revealing day.“

With all this said my heart is truly to still go back to Europe and reach out there with the Gospel through love, community and Dance Music, but God has called me to stay Home and be equipped and pour out into my community here, in San Diego. I am excited for 2011 and all the Good works that God has prepared for this year!!!

My goals for this year:
-To Love God with ALL my Heart, ALL my Soul, and ALL my Mind.
-To Love my Community well (1825, the rock church, local Electronic Dance Music Community)
- Be a man after God’s own Heart
-Uniquely spread the pervasive hope of the Gospel to my community.
-Produce and have signed 5 tracks or remixes.

I know God is able to do all of these things in my life. If you think about me please keep me in your prayers. There is a crown in heaven waiting for you because you choose to be a part of this work even in what you may think is a simple prayer and might not do anything significant, there is power in your prayers. Achieving Greatness!!! (thoughts from a message i recently heard)

“…and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me; for the one who is least among all of you, this is the one who is great.”" Luke 9:48

Greatness and Success aren’t how man people “like” you or “follow” you, but it is how many lives you are able to effect and transform along the journey!!! TO even effect and cause change and transformation towards positive is a successful life!!!

How much value is there in children in our culture today… what financial profit is there for people to have children. Usually not much. When we have children now a days most people are putting all their money into the children and not getting any financial return in the investment. Sometimes we really feel the burden. In today’s Culture we are always looking for the people who we can use to get ahead!!! This is the mindset of our culture and it is causing people to cut each other down and break each others work. The people who are successful in this culture are no longer attaining a greatness that last but a temporary greatness full of bitterness.

In the past Great master’s always had great apprentices. A great master will always set a platform and foundation for the people who follow and learn from them so that his/her successor will do an even greater work. In those days the master would take people on and teach them all that they know. They would invest in these people Lives. For example if you look at Leonardo Di Vinci, his roots go back all the way to Donatello. He was apprenticed in the work shop of Andrea Del Verrocchio (1), and Andrea Del Verrocchio was potentially an apprentice of the great Donatello (2).

Greatness truly comes not from getting all you can from people whether it is attention, money, and position, BUT Greatness Comes from what you can invest into someone else’s life and build a platform to give someone to do things much more greater than you can do!!! As an apprentice one of the first things you learn is to serve the master. When one uses their art to serve others this is when you truly become great. Though one may never see the greatness that comes from the works they have done. It is when the master leaves a Legacy of the Good works that God has prepared them to walk in!!!!

Getting into the Muck!!!

This week at 24-7 prayer the theme has been what has been going on in Ibiza!!! I am sitting here in a cafe in Altea reflecting on the past few weeks and thinking about all i have seen, heard, felt, smelt and tasted. From The great and amazing things that make it feel like an incredible vacation to the awkward reminders and broken hearts of knowing we are on a mission trip.

On our trip we have been able to connect with the Local Teens and young adults through art, music, DJing, Dancing, and Improve. We Got to have times of just hanging out and being social to times of intimate interaction of having deep conversations on spirituality. Not only was God reaching out to the people of Spain but he used each of us to bring out new insights to our own group and our own worldview!!! We have been Looking deeper into the lives of Jesus, Peter and Paul. Seeing the truth behind Community and the forces pressing against us in this world. Taking the time for connection with people versus just getting the job done. Knowing that when people are in good relationship and community the productivity of the task at hand will actually be done more effectively and efficiently!!!

How can we be more effective in our community? One of the ways this happens is through vulnerability and stepping out of your comfort zone. In a sense being Naked and real with people!!! Now i don’t mean we should just sit around naked literally and talk to each other, but that sense of being able to bear all with each other in a specific place.

One of the Guys from Ibiza i met posted an Article that really hit home with me and my prayer is the same as his (please take the time to read the article it will hit home). In the Article Bruce says:

“I felt God was revealing – excuse the pun – something to me. Quite often I just get on and do the work at night without relying on God’s power. I know I can do this work, and do it well, yet most of the time I feel comfortable. Am I willing to feel uncomfortable for God? Will I take some risks and dare to look silly? Will I keep safe this summer or get more dangerous? Am I willing to look like a fool?

Yes to all of those questions – but i need God’s Spirit to give me the ability to move in power. I’m hungry for it.”(Bruce’s 24-7 Blog)

This is definitely where i am at!!!

Side Note: Here in Spain there are many beautiful women between the Ages of 18-30 all around. Along with that here in Altea this is a large force of Russian Mafia and prostitution. The Girls don’t seem to dress how they would on the streets in the main cities of the United States. They are Dressed like most of the other young girls in the town.

The other day i was just minding my business and was walking down to the paseo next to the sea. I was off to just connect on the internet and check some stuff. When i was about half way down my world was rocked in a way that is unbelievable… It was about Mid day during the Hours of siesta (when everyone is at home taking a nap or going to have Lunch). At this time a lot of us are trying to find a place to sit in the shade or just going to a small restaurant to grab a bite. So as I was walking down the road i saw this really pretty girl and in My head I was like wow she is so beautiful (if you know me this is a typical thought in my mind when i see a gorgeous woman). From where I was though I could only see her face and hair. She seem to be sitting in a place where there were stairs and some shade and not thinking anything of I was like she must be relaxing getting out of the shade. Then as I got closer my senses and heart were overwhelmed as I began that there was something different about this situation. Something literally didn’t “smell” right. Why would a beautiful girl randomly be sitting out in the sun in the middle of the day alone without any friends. As I passed here I then realized she was relieving herself completely in the middle of broad daylight like a little puppy on the street. As I had been passing here the first thing that caught me was her eyes. When I looked in her eyes I knew something wasn’t right. Then within a couple of seconds of me passing her a man pulled up with a nicer car and jumped out with a large towel to take the girl. As I watched this I had an overwhelming rush of emotions come over me. All I Could do is pray. Like this woman I felt hopeless. I felt compassion but didn’t know I could act in a way that would help her. She seemed like a loss puppy and I couldn’t pick her up all I could do is just walk by. This woman had been reduced to something like an animal or less.

God teach me to love like you!!! Help me to bring you glory to help others see their worth in you!!!

PSALM 139 – YOU ARE WORTH IT… HE DIED FOR YOU, EVEN THOUGH YOU MAY FAIL HIM, HE STILL LOVE YOU!!!!

1 O LORD, you have searched me
and you know me.

2 You know when I sit and when I rise;

EDGE WEEK 5- Living out God’s Love with Music

Its Sunday afternoon just after siesta on the 25th of July in Altea Spain and i am sitting looking out at the sea!!! I have been gone for more than a month and am truly become integrated into Spanish culture!!! The only thing i need to keep working on to completely be emersed is to have a full ability in speaking the language of the people here. This can take months to years!!!

This is only my second country outside my own that i have traveled to and again i feel like i am at home!!! Living and feeling the heartbeat and pulse of a city and a country and joining it and becoming one with it is and amazing thing to do. One of the things that has made it easy for me to connect with many here in Spain is my love for house and techno music. This sound is truly something that brings our young adult community together worldwide. After coming back from Ibiza and living out a dream, I came back to Altea to the local lounge, named Cocoon, after giving them a CD Demo of my DJing before leaving for Ibiza and was asked to play on the following Thursday night. It was a beautiful night of connecting. A group of our Edgies came out and dance the night away. Along with them some of the friends of one of our interns Havila, that we met at the beach for our Bohemian Night, came out and enjoyed the night too. This week was def filled with load of Connection!!! God is truly moving in the community through many ways.

I pray that you all are encouraged!!! My heart is that you would do what you love and do it to give God all the Glory. Like Jesus said, ” And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.”(John 17:5). I have head it said that we are like Diamonds!!! Diamonds are precious stones, but where does their worth truly come from? Is it the fact that it a stone, is it the cut, or is the piece of gold or platinum it is set in!!! The worth of a Diamond is found in its cut and how it reflects light!!! The brilliance of a diamond is found in its ability to reflect the glory of the light!!! In the same way this is how we are to be!!! Your true value is in how much of the Light you are truly reflecting out in your life!!!
